The third and final installment in the Tolkien- epic fantasy movie adaptation premiered in theaters on this day, 15 years ago.
It became an instant classic and managed to live up to the expectations that the first two movies of trilogy built up to. Everything lead to this moment and it truely blew up our minds.
I was 14 years old when my father took me and my yonger brother to the cinema to watch the movie. It wasn’t on the premiere day. Here (in Sweden) it premiered one day later than the US and we saw it one or two weeks afterwards. Yet, I still remember how I got carried away and the three hours in theaters literally felt like 5 minutes.
I had a friend that prior to the release avoided to see trailers and wished not to see the posters all around the town so that the upcoming experience of seeing the climax to the trilogy would not become spoiled, not in the smallest detail at all.
Return of the King won 11 academy awards (Oscars), including the Best Picture (which actually means the best movie). Uo to date it got a rating of 8,9/10 with over 1,4 million votes counted and makes it the highest rated of the series.
The Saga will be revived by a TV show in production from Amazon. It is expected that it will center around a young Aragorn (at least the first season) and to be minimum 5 seasons long. Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf) has expressed his wish to be a part of it and some rumors claim that Peter Jackson himself will be involved with the production.
