‘UNREAL ENGINE’ IS ROYALTY-FREE FOR THE FIRST $1 MILLION

Unreal Engine 5 was revealed a couple of days ago and everyone is talking about it. Epic revealed that their intention for “this next generation” is “to achieve photorealism on par with movie CG and real life“.

Up until now, devs using it for commercial purposes were taxed with 5 percent royalty on gross revenue above $3,000 per product and per quarter.

In a move that probably is aimed to gain a greater marketshare, Epic changes the royalty system:

This license is free to use and incurs 5% royalties when you monetize your game or other interactive off-the-shelf product and your lifetime gross revenues from that product exceed $1,000,000 USD.

That means that your game, or whatever you develop using their engine, has to exceed $1 million before you’ll need to pay Epic any royalty fees.

Unreal Engine 5 was revealed two days ago with a real-time demo running live on PS5 and it’s just as jaw-dropping as you would dream of. Well, beyond that actually.

This is the future and I’m really excited about this guys. It might take a couple of years ’til we get there but we’re in for a threat!
